The behaviour of shallow foundations on slopes is an important topic of interest in geotechnical engineering. This paper presents the results of laboratory model tests of an eccentrically loaded strip footing on a slope. Experiments were conducted with an eccentrically loaded model footing under various eccentricity ratios (±e/B) and normalized footing distances (d/B) and the results were compared with previous literature. The results confirm that the load eccentricity and normalized footing distance have considerable effects on the drained bearing capacity. The ultimate bearing capacity of a negative eccentric load is greater than that of a positive eccentric load up to a relative distance of d/B&amp;nbsp;=&amp;nbsp;3. At this point, the bearing capacity becomes almost the same regardless of the eccentricity location relative to the slope face. Furthermore, the failure mechanism is not symmetrical; a greater failure surface length can develop on the slope side and this length decreases with increasing eccentricity.

The pile foundation is adopted to transfer loads from the structure to the soil when the structure is embedded in a weak soil stratum. Soil-pile system has a nonlinear behavior; thus, it is more complicated to understand. This study focuses on the numerical investigation of interaction of soil–pile–structure system (ISPS) and interaction of soil–pile system (ISP) under lateral loads. Nonlinear static analysis is carried out considering the lateral capacity of ISPS and ISP systems under lateral loading using pushover analysis. A parametric study concerning different types of axial loading, pile length and pile radius, as well as longitudinal steel ratio in different types of sand is conducted to observe the response of (ISPS) and (ISP) systems. Besides that, lateral capacity deflection and moment curves, as well as the formation of plastic hinge are evaluated for ISPS and ISP systems for a typical pile and various soil types and their results are presented. The results show that the lateral capacity is influenced by the parametric study.</style>
<issue><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">2</style></issue></record><record><source-app During the last decade, the construction sector in Algeria has been in constant development with higher demands for urban lands. This has resulted in placing building foundations in closer proximities with potential impact on the bearing capacity and settlements. Moreover, there have been limited investigations on the interference and overlapping effects on the ultimate bearing capacity of closely placed footings. This work explains the numerical investigation of the interference effect of juxtaposed strip footings based on a bilayer granular soil. A numerical model, based on the finite element method, was developed using Plaxis Package. The influence of spacing between foundations, friction angle, Young's modulus and thickness of the first layer on the efficiency factor ξγ were examined. The obtained results show clearly that the efficiency factor depends significantly on the thickness and strength of the first layer.
